SPRO, the moniker of sound artist Jimmy Pizarro through which he channels his modern ambient explorations, returns with a new album: <Haihat>. This follows his debut <Bilac> [NOCUEDO EDITIONS 2022]. The sonic architecture of <Haihat> comprises seven tracks, conceived under the ethos of seamless, integrated, and continuous listening—crafted as an uninterrupted flow rather than discrete cuts. The work is immersive, timeless, enveloping, and dense. Its evolution unfolds through organic progressions engaging in a ceaseless dialectic, oscillating between abstraction and tangible visceral impact. This is a meticulously constructed sonic assemblage, where each segment functions as an indivisible whole, revealing itself as a single, coherent, immaculate, precise, and purposeful opus. <Haihat> is released as a limited edition CD, only 25 copies, housed in a sealed aluminum pouch adorned with a metallic printed label. The outer sleeve is printed in full color on 350gsm matte-coated couche paper, featuring spot UV varnish details and its inner sleeve comes in natural fiber rice paper. The edition is further elevated by a double-sided 10x17” full-color poster. Artwork and mastering by AU.
The heady narrative crafted by SPRO, which began with <Bilac>, reaches new depths in <Haihat>. Sonic textures twist and intertwine intellectually across timeless landscapes of overwhelming sinuosity and density, weaving a timbral palette that unfolds a dynamic spectrum through subtle variations, creating a perpetually evolving sound tapestry. The sonic flow is kinetic, osmotic, blurred, vibrant, and vaporous, transporting the listener into immersive alternate planes. <Haihat> is a breathing, pulsating, enveloping sonic fabric. SPRO does not merely create music; he unveils a constantly mutating sound map, a living organism inviting exploration through its countless folds. This perception of sound embodied in <Haihat> is further anchored by the album’s continuous listening concept. Regardless of the presence of discrete tracks, the uninterrupted sonic narrative forms an indivisible mantle, compellingly hard to disengage from. Though divisions exist—recognizable and tangible at the surface—they serve merely as convenient temporal markers on a journey that, in truth, neither halts nor restarts, but flows seamlessly. The album opener, <LUNN>, introduces a subtle white noise signal fused with a crisp pulse slipping between warm, layered harmonies bearing unusual progressions. These demand a vibrant, controlled tension pulse, forging an intoxicating climate of drowsiness and lethargy. Next comes <DEV>, a crackling stream that stealthily carves through a mélange of overlapping textured cushions, delicately stretching and compressing controlled fragments. It erupts into a twilight of sweet, heated, accelerated synthesized notes, culminating in a symphonic climax of profound brilliance. <CHACK>, by contrast, is subterranean, dusty, slippery, mutable, yet warm—a track that conjures a rare pleasure, perhaps rooted in the deeply analog character of its recording. <FADPA> unfolds as a multitimbral dialogue that scatters and dynamically decomposes into fragments of controlled chaos: a nonlinear exercise where each pulse seems extracted from a deep conversation between disparate textures that at times vanish into distance only to suddenly burst into the foreground. <S3> seems to pulse, yet plays with our perception—it’s a dystopian mirage, a sonic theater where instrumental disorder serves as an invisible playwright dictating tempo amid elegant, calculated chaos. <BOIN> operates within a dynamic interplay of contrapuntal tensions, modulating sophisticated intensity peaks that challenge temporal perception. A constant dialectic unfolds between imminent eruption and momentary serenity—a pulse oscillating between chaotic acceleration and deliberate pause. This progression charges the piece with visceral emotion, an underground current that never loses momentum, anchoring a sustained alertness where calm is only the prelude to the next wave. It is a sonic and narrative architecture exploring the edge between control and vertigo—a high-tension sensory experience. The closing piece, <EFELL>, offers an essential counterpoint, a solid foundation marked by a cadence in minor keys that exude an almost melancholic calm. Reverberated pulses act as a steady heartbeat accompanying this emotional descent, offering a final reflection on the accumulated emotional complexity of the journey. Thus, <Haihat> stakes its claim in an atypical sonic terrain: a space conceived for the contemporary adventurer where listening becomes an act of constant discovery. Within this unconventional realm, dosage merges with vital flow, transforming every listen into an experience that transcends the ephemeral—a pleasure imprinted into the very fibers of body and mind, extending and deepening the voyage beyond sound itself. It might be said that <Haihat> comfortably situates itself anywhere on the spectrum between TIM HECKER and VLADISLAV DELAY.
